Millennial Moms Redefining Motherhood

Millennial Moms Redefining Motherhood

Motherhood is no longer an obligation but a choice that women make. The definition of motherhood has evolved over the years as millennials become new mothers. Their mindset, ways and approach differentiate them from Gen X mothers. They not only are aware of their responsibilities but also know how to seek help. The idea of self-sacrifice as the ultimate expression of motherhood has been challenged, breaking age-old stereotypes, and for this, they deserve a pat on their back!

While they have succeeded in altering traditions and norms, millennial mothers are also striving to bring change in various other aspects:

1) Difference in parenting style Most millennial moms already have a plan of how they are going to raise a kid, even before their baby is born. Their beliefs, ideas, and concepts of parenting are significantly stronger and clearer. They are likely aware of the challenges they will face and are well-prepared to navigate through this phase of their lives. What truly makes them different is the fact that they aren’t afraid to ditch the old rulebook. Instead, they are capable of carving their own path in their journey of becoming a mother.

2) Tech-savvy moms The answers to most of their questions are there on the internet. They do their research and they know which articles to read, and which brands to trust. Millennial mothers talk to paediatricians and health experts directly; they even seek support from other mothers or connect with like-minded mothers through online communities. This is how they stay one step ahead of the parenting game!

3) Saving Mother Earth for their babies For millennial mothers, saving the planet isn’t just a vague concept– it's something that holds utmost importance when it comes to raising their babies. They’re more inclined towards using sustainable products and brands that care for the environment, even at an added cost. They are committed to conscious choices that benefit both their children and the world they’ll inherit.

4) ‘Me time’ matters Normally, Gen X mothers (read ‘our mothers’) didn't know about ‘me time’ or maybe they knew but did not get any. Thankfully, millennial moms have started to understand that family, children, and work are certainly major parts of their lives, but it doesn’t mean they stop doing things they once enjoyed. Having leisure time that involves just them is something that is being acknowledged and acted upon by millennial moms!

5) Honest conversations And here comes one of the best parts: millennial mothers handle it like pros by engaging in deep conversations with their kids. Something as simple as conversing with a parent is something previous generations of children weren’t often taught. Consequently, most millennials have grown up with a peculiar relationship with their parents. However, the scenario has shifted today. Millennial mothers are actively making an effort to foster open and honest dialogues with their kids. They’ve ensured that the doors are always open for their children to approach them, no matter the situation.

6) Smart Financing Millennial parents start planning about finances well before they even think of having a baby. They want to provide the best of everything to their babies: the best food, the best education, the best toys, and more. They understand the importance of financial stability in providing a secure future for their children. From saving for medical expenses to creating an emergency fund, they leave no stone unturned in preparing for the financial responsibilities of parenthood.

8) Work-life balancing ninjas It's needless to say, millennial mothers manage work and life like superwomen! Research reveals that they are adept at prioritizing their children amidst their busy schedules. For them, the traditional binary roles of either being a stay-at-home mom or pursuing a career do not apply. Even if they opt to stay at home, they find innovative and different ways to tap into their potential, whether it's through working from home, freelancing, starting a small business, or starting a home-based venture.

While involving children in their daily tasks may sometimes slow down the process, maybe that’s the point, as these #onelittlemoments make the parenting journey worthwhile!
